National Tourism Foundation, Travelers Conservation Foundation Announce New Scholarship

National Tourism Foundation, Travelers Conservation Foundation Announce New Scholarship First TCF Sustainable Tourism Scholarship to be Awarded in 2004 LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 16, 2003) -- The National Tourism Foundation will offer a new scholarship that will be administered in partnership with the Travelers Conservation Foundation (TCF.) The joint venture, which will be known as the TCF Sustainable Tourism Scholarship Award, was announced during the 2003 National Tour Association Annual Convention in Charlotte, N.C. Beginning in January 2004, the collaboration will award $1,000 annually to a graduate student in the tourism field. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and the creativity of an essay about practical applications and project ideas in sustainable tourism. Applicants are challenged to think about ways the industry can assist in helping to foster sustainable and responsible growth and use of sites around the globe. Bruce Beckham, CTP, executive director of TCF describes the scholarship as a perfect match for the goals of the organization. “The Travelers Conservation Foundation’s mission is to be the tourism industry’s vehicle for encouraging responsible conservation, protection and use of the world’s natural, cultural and historic treasures,” said Beckham. “This new scholarship is a logical addition to our philanthropic programs, all of which are designed to ‘give back’ to the sites and places which are, in fact our products.” National Tourism Foundation Executive Director Randy Fiveash feels that the collaboration is a positive move for both groups. “This is a great example of partnership between two tourism foundations that share the purpose of securing the future of the industry,” said Fiveash. “We hope that this collaboration will serve as a model for future partnerships.” The application form and essay topic for 2004 are available at www.ntfonline.org. Applications are to be submitted directly to the Travelers Conservation Foundation. Donations to the TCF Sustainable Tourism Scholarship Award may be made through the TCF Web site at www.tcfonline.org. The National Tourism Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports research and education in travel and tourism. Since 1982, the National Tourism Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million to travel and tourism students in the form of grants, scholarships and awards.
