Arthur C. Tauck - 2002 Inductee

Tauck World Discovery Arthur Tauck is Chairman of the Board of Tauck World Discovery, a tour company based on Westport, Conn., which was founded as Tauck Tours in 1925, by Arthur's father, Arthur Tauck, Sr. Young Arthur joined his father's business part time as a tour director in 1950, while attending Lehigh University. After graduation and a tour of duty in the Air Force, Arthur returned to Tauck and became its President in 1958. At the time, the company offered six tour destinations along the East Coast and carried approximately 2,000 travelers per year. In the late 1950s, Arthur foresaw the future of combining motor tours with air travel. In 1958, he introduced charter air tour packages to Nova Scotia which still operate today. A year later, he linked the National Parks of the West by using air and motorcoach when the rest of the industry was using rail throughout. Tauck was the first to use helicopter sightseeing as an integral part of Hawaii touring. This was followed by further innovations in the use of helicopters when Arthur introduced "Heli-Hiking" as a new concept for seeing the Canadian Rockies, and successfully marketed these helicopter tours to senior citizens. Heli-hiking combines 2-4 days of motor touring with 2-6 days of helicopter lifts onto the glaciers, meadows and peaks of the high country. In 1991, Tauck launched the "Yellow Roads of Europe" series, named for the less-traveled scenic routes Arthur recalled from his time spent abroad in the Air Force. The product line has become extremely popular, and grown to represent one-third of the company's business. During the eleven years since, Tauck has expanded its product line to include journeys to all seven continents. In addition to its international growth, Tauck World Discovery continues in its role as a leader in the North American tour industry, offering 60 itineraries in North America. Tauck remains a family company with Arthur's daughter Robin Tauck serving as President of Tauck World Discovery and son Peter as President of Tauck Holdings, Inc., which was established in 2002 to focus on new business ventures. In his position as Chairman of the Board, Arthur oversees both these entities. Among its many awards, Tauck World Discovery received Travel Management's REX Award for six consecutive years, being voted by ASTA agents the No. 1 Tour Operator in America. In 1998 and 2000, Tauck was named #1 among Tour Operators and Safari Outfitters in Travel & Leisure magazine's "World's Best" poll, and has won dozens of awards over the years for its high quality products and outstanding customers service. Arthur is a past president of both the United States Tour Operators Association and the National Tour Association. He is currently a Trustee and Vice Chairman of the Institute of Certified Travel Agents and serves on the Board of Directors of the Travel Industry Association of America. He also chairs the Travelers Conservation Foundation as well as the Tauck Foundation, The family's philanthropic entity.
